What is Resource Estimation?
Just like population grows and depletes, mining resources follow similar mathematical patterns. We use differential equations to model resource depletion over time.
๐ Deriving the Depletion Formula
Define the Problem
Let R(t) be the amount of resource remaining at time t.
The rate of depletion is proportional to the remaining resource:
Where:
- dR/dt = Rate of change of resource
- k = Depletion rate constant (positive)
- R = Current resource amount
- Negative sign = Resources are decreasing
Separate Variables
Rearrange the equation to separate R and t:
This allows us to integrate each side separately.
Integrate Both Sides
Integrate from initial time (t=0) to time t:
Where C is the constant of integration.
Apply Initial Conditions
At t = 0, R = Rโ (initial resource):
Final Exponential Decay Formula
Exponentiate both sides to get the final formula:
R(t) = Resource remaining at time t
Rโ = Initial resource
k = Depletion rate constant
t = Time
This is the same form as exponential growth, but with a negative exponent!
